Who is allowed to see you?
Your location during the remote appointment determines which state must permit the professional to practise. US guidance checked on September 26, 2026 explains this rule.
In some states, doctors with a licence from elsewhere can register for remote visits instead of obtaining a full local licence. This separate permission is called telehealth registration. The rules vary by state, as recorded on September 26, 2026.
Ask what gives that person permission to see you in your location on the appointment day. Get their full name and profession.
The state medical board keeps doctors’ licence records. It also publishes records of penalties it has imposed on doctors for breaking medical rules.
Boards differ in what they publish. Seeing no listed penalty gives no assurance about the care you will get.
Use the board for that profession. Ask it to confirm any part of the record that is unclear.
